Built over the ruins of the ancient stadium of Emperor Domition, Piazza Navona pays homage to it's foundations thanks to its long narrow shape which follows the form of the original circus. The square is dominated by Bernini's fantastic Fountain of the Four Rivers which is situated in the center. Depicting allegories for the four great rivers in the four continents recognized by the Renaissance geographers, it shows the Nile, the Ganges, the Danube and the Rio della Plata. There are also two other beautiful fountains by Giacomo della Porta. Worth visiting is the charming church of Sant'Agnese in Agone which stands halfway up the piazza, on the site where Saint Agnes was martyred.
This is a great place to sit at one of the numerous outdoor cafès, relax, and watch the world go by. The center of the square is filled with artists and portrait painters showing their work and often musicians stop by to play to the crowds. The area around Piazza Navona is a myriad of small streets and enticing piazzas, filled with antique shops, boutiques, bars and restaurants and don't miss the spectacular Pantheon which is situated just a few minutes away on foot.
