Testaccio is an intriguing part of the city whose name derives from the 'Monte Testaccio'; a mound of broken clay pots (amphorae) which were stacked here in ancient times and upon which the neighbourhood was built. The area therefore contains much archeological evidence of everyday life in ancient Rome, and many bars and restaurants have been built into the hillside to allow visitors to view the underground remains. Nowadays Testaccio is a very typical Roman neighbourhood, famed for its nightlife. There is also a fantastic fresh farmer's market every morning between Monday and Saturday, and the area's restaurants are commonly thought to be the best representatives of true Roman cuisine.
